Handicap International Prostheses Workshop in Haiti

Handicap International, an international nongovernmental organization, was present in Haiti when the earthquake hit on January 12, 2010, and was able to take almost immediate action in response to the emergency.

The organization responded to the disaster by providing assistance to the injured, managing a logistics platform for the distribution of emergency aid and setting up temporary shelters for victims of the disaster. In early March, the organization also began producing temporary orthopedic devices for amputees in an orthopedic fitting workshop opened in a central and accessible area of Port-au-Prince.

The workshop is used to produce prostheses and to test them on patients. Rehabilitation activities and exercises are also performed at the workshop as part of the patients' follow-up care.

The organization's goal is to set up and coordinate Haiti's long-term rehabilitation and orthopedic fitting capacity by training Haitian staff to ensure it is sustainable. Handicap International is also looking into the possibility of setting up an additional orthopedic fitting facility in another part of the capital or elsewhere in Haiti, where major needs are identified.

Heidi Latsky Dance
, a New York City based dance company, boldly incorporates the diverse definitions of the provocative title GIMP to introduce audiences to performers whose unique attributes, physical and otherwise, are honored and utilized in highly dynamic, virtuosic and often visceral ways. Currently, the company is in residency at the JCC where they will premiere "If" Latsky's newest work in December 2010.

GIMP premiered in Albuquerque at North Fourth Arts Center in 2008 and has since been performed at The Kennedy Center (DC), Boston's ICA, Burlington's The Flynn and the Abron's Arts Center (NYC) among other venues. GIMP will be featured at the Dublin Dance Festival in May 2010 and continue to tour internationally throughout the Spring and Fall of 2010.

GIMP examines the uncompromising ways we are often identified or defined by our physicality; an elegant landscape of portraits, illuminating limbs to accentuate uncommon beauty, mystery and grace. GIMP confronts the audience with their preconceptions; challenging us to re-think accepted notions about dance, performance and body image.
